The Science Behind Cabn
A page for the curious. Cabn wasn't built on guesses. We went deep into the research on what long flights do to your body and what actually fixes it. Below is the problem behind each feature, the science that proves it's real, and the science behind how we solve it. Feature by feature.
1. Neck Support — the Zero-Gravity Cradle
The problem. Your head is heavy, around 5kg, and an economy seat gives it nothing to rest against. The moment it tilts forward, the load on your neck muscles climbs sharply, and they hold that strain for hours (Hansraj, 2014). Holding a static, unsupported posture for long periods is a known driver of neck and shoulder muscle fatigue.
How we solve it. Proper support takes the load off the muscles. Research on supported head and neck positions found that adding support can cut neck muscle activity by a large margin (Yee & Kazerooni, 2016). Headrests with side support have been shown to reduce neck strain and fatigue during prolonged sitting (Zare, 2025). The memory foam also dampens vibration, and cushioning of this kind has been shown to absorb a meaningful share of seat and engine vibration (Luo, 2024), which is one more source of muscle fatigue on a flight.
2. Massage — Four-Hands Massage
The problem. Sitting still for hours leaves the neck muscles tense and knotted, with reduced circulation and a buildup of metabolic waste. That tension is a major source of the stiffness and pain you land with.
How we solve it. Targeted pressure massage has strong evidence behind it. A meta-analysis found that pressure massage reduced neck pain and raised the pain threshold in the treated muscles (Xu, 2023). Massage improves local circulation and helps clear metabolic waste from tired muscle (Weerapong et al.). It also works on a nerve level: mechanical pressure stimulates mechanoreceptors that help block pain signals and trigger the release of endorphins (Frontiers, 2024). Massage has also been linked to lower cortisol and a shift toward the body's rest-and-recover state.
3. Heat & Red Light — Hot Stone Warmth
The problem. Cold, tense muscles with restricted blood flow hurt more and recover slower. The longer they stay locked up in a cramped seat, the worse it gets.
How we solve it, part one (heat). Applied heat opens the blood vessels and increases blood flow to the muscle (Malanga / IASP). In a clinical comparison, heat relieved neck pain on a level comparable to common anti-inflammatory medication (Freiwald, 2021). A 32-trial meta-analysis found heat effective at easing muscle soreness (Wang et al.).
How we solve it, part two (red light). Red and near-infrared light therapy, also called photobiomodulation, has growing evidence for pain relief and recovery. A 14-trial meta-analysis found it reduced pain (Tsou, 2025), and earlier work found low-level light therapy effective for chronic neck pain (Brosseau, 2014). At wavelengths around 660 to 670nm, the light is thought to boost cellular energy production and nitric oxide, which supports recovery. Cabn uses 660nm.
4. Noise & Sound — Quiet Cabin and Calm Frequencies
The problem. Cabin noise is more than annoying. Constant noise at the levels found on a plane raises the body's stress hormones, and it does this even while you sleep (Hahad, 2019; Gabinet, 2024). Elevated stress keeps your muscles tense and unable to fully relax (StatPearls, 2024), which feeds straight back into the neck and shoulder pain. So the noise isn't separate from the pain. It amplifies it.
How we solve it, part one (silence). Active noise cancelling removes the constant drone that drives that stress response in the first place.
How we solve it, part two (frequencies). Sound can move the body the other way, toward calm. Calming music and audio have been shown to activate the parasympathetic nervous system and improve stress markers like heart rate variability (Mojtabavi, 2020; Thoma, 2013). Vibroacoustic and tuned-frequency approaches have been shown to ease muscle tension in controlled trials. And specific tuning matters: music at 432Hz was associated with lower cortisol and reduced anxiety compared to standard 440Hz tuning (Lenzi, 2022). Cabn's frequency tuning leans on this, shaping what you hear toward the calming end.
How It All Connects
The four work as one system because the problems are connected. The seat strains your neck, the strain cascades into your shoulders and back, and the noise raises your stress and locks the muscles tighter. Cabn supports the neck, works the tension out, warms and recovers the muscle, and removes the noise that amplifies all of it. Fix the inputs, and the pain doesn't get the chance to build.
